Balayage and hair painting are techniques that have been around for a couple of decades, but is increasingly becoming more and more popular, especially with celebrities.  Balayage or hair painting is the act of using free handed brush strokes to apply the highlights or hair color.  Balayage can be best used to create natural dimension, a fun pop of color, or even for natural grey blending.

Hair is sectioned off in the natural way hair will fall, and then the color of lightener will be brushed along the hair in a pattern that allows for a natural movement and add dimension in the hair.  There can be many effects with these techniques ranging from natural highlights, a dramatic ombre, or somewhere in the middle with a soft transitioned sombre.  Below are some pictures of different application methods and effects, as well as different articles about balayage.
